<page method="xml-texts" num="15"><![CDATA[Laila Shokry Business Development Analyst at CID Consulting From studying economics to excelling in consulting Our student’s corporate experiences]]></page>
<page method="xml-texts" num="16"><![CDATA[After graduation, Laila landed her dream role in a global development consulting firm. Laila Mostafa Ahmed Zaki Mohamed Shokry started her journey at IE University with a strong interest in the financial sector. She chose the Bachelor in Economics due to its broader focus, unique learning approach and wide range of career paths. During the program, Laila discovered her passion for consulting after working with IE Talent & Careers. She turned to the Strategy Lab and IE Consulting Club to start developing essential practical skills. Laila is now working as an analyst at CID Consulting. Could you tell us about your current job at CID Consulting? I’m a business development analyst at CID Consulting, a development consulting firm. We interact with global donors such as the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the European Union and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ) to secure projects in Egypt. These projects are usually developed in consortium with other international companies. We also identify opportunities within the private sector. Since joining the team, I’ve worked on projects related to sustainability, energy, business development, inclusion and more. We develop proposals for donors and private companies and even collaborate with external experts, as we are in charge of hiring the local technical teams. My favorite thing about CID Consulting is that it is a great place to learn and grow both personally and professionally. Why did you choose the Bachelor in Economics at IE University? I was very interested in the financial services sector and saw that the Bachelor in Economics had a comprehensive curriculum and incredible learning opportunities. Similarly, IE University stood out to me for its friendly, international community and the quality education it offers. For instance, the small class sizes allowed us to build relationships with our professors and classmates. How did your experience at IE University prepare you for your professional career? My IE Experience was very hands-on. IE Talent & Careers helped me discover the consulting world and encouraged me to try new fields, while the Strategy Lab solidified my desire to work in consulting. Meanwhile, the IE Career Portal helped me develop my resume and cover letter, network with other consultants, prepare for interviews and find job listings tailored to my interests. What’s more, IE University’s emphasis on the importance of networking led me to build lifelong connections. Do you have any advice for IE University students and alumni looking to pursue a consulting career? I suggest joining the IE Consulting Club as soon as you can. It exposes you to all aspects of consulting and gives you the opportunity to work on case studies and interact with leaders in the field. Also, interview with as many companies as possible because they serve as great practice. Finally, network, network, network—find people who can guide you through the processes and never give up. Lastly, what would you tell someone interested in studying at IE University? It’s a great place to be—it truly feels like home. Everyone is super welcoming and the international presence allows you to learn a lot about different cultures and make friends across the world. With the small classes, it’s easy to contribute, learn and build relationships. And just having the ability to experience two beautiful cities in one university experience is a dream. From studying economics to excelling in consulting The Bachelor in Economics led Laila to the world of consulting. She initially wanted to work in finance, but her trajectory shifted when she joined the IE Consulting Club and talked with the IE Talent & Careers team.]]></page>

<page method="xml-texts" num="21"><![CDATA[Alyssa Nichols Lead FI Portfolio Investment Analyst at T. Rowe Price Turning her passion for finance into a lucrative career Our student’s corporate experiences]]></page>
<page method="xml-texts" num="22"><![CDATA[When she discovered the Bachelor in Economics at IE University, Alyssa knew she’d found the right fit: a well-rounded program that allowed her to choose elective classes specifically related to investing. Tell us about your professional journey at T. Rowe Price. I started at T. Rowe Price as a fellow in their Investment Fellowship Program. Typically, fellows do four six-month rotations across different analyst groups (for example, Private Equity, Trading Analytics, Multi-Asset Research and Fixed Income). After two years in the program— and sometimes earlier—fellows are placed in permanent positions, often with one of the groups they rotated in. In June, I started my first rotation with the Investment and Trading Solutions team. I was involved in building apps and other tools for Fixed Income portfolio managers, portfolio investment analysts (PIAs) and other team members directly related to the accounts and funds we manage. During this time, I realized that I preferred to stay in a market-facing role like this one, rather than some of the more research-focused rotations. There was an opening on the Fixed Income PIA team, so I applied and interviewed for the position. I just received and accepted the offer to permanently fill that role, so I’ll be exiting the Fellowship Program early. I will be working with the rest of the trading desk to help model and execute the portfolio managers’ goals for various strategies. Which skills do you think are necessary to succeed in your field? This is a field that requires attention to detail, strong critical thinking and an analytical mindset. You also need to be able to handle long hours and fast- paced work environments. But the most important asset to have is a passion for finance and investments. How did the IE Community help you pursue your fellowship? The IE Talent & Careers team helped me format and write my resume to highlight my best qualities. They also shared prep materials and mock interviews specific to the jobs I was applying for. Additionally, the ability to take electives without restrictions allowed me to choose classes that have given me a better understanding of the topics I work with now. How did your experience at IE University prepare you for your professional career? IE University not only prepared me for the Fellowship Program, it also positioned me to find a permanent role more quickly. With the wide variety of classes I took for my Bachelor in Economics, I was able to gain a baseline understanding of many of the concepts I was introduced to in my first few weeks on the job. Additionally, the fact that classes aren’t strictly structured around lectures and an exam allowed me to learn and practice many different skills that have been essential in the workplace, like giving presentations, preparing reports and completing projects. Even just being able to effectively show my knowledge and communicate results in conversations with colleagues is something that IE University helped me build confidence in. These are the qualities that helped me stand out and demonstrate my potential in the workplace. What competitive advantage has studying at IE University provided you? Having studied at a university that is international in all senses of the word—in terms of location, learning experiences and student body—I stood out among other candidates back in my home country. Many times, interviewers would focus heavily on my decision to go abroad, as well as how I fared in an environment outside my comfort zone. It allowed me to showcase traits that employers in the industry are looking for, like the ability to adapt to new settings and work with people from different backgrounds. What advice would you give to future Bachelor in Economics students? Put in the effort, especially in the first few years, to boost your GPA and learn which parts of economics you like most. For me, it was game theory and capital markets. This will help you on your path to finding internships and, eventually, a career. Get comfortable asking questions and always express an interest in the things you’re passionate about. So far, I’ve found that the best way to move forward in my career is by finding what I like and putting myself out there, so that the people making the decisions know I will be highly motivated to do the job well if they give me an opportunity. If someone is thinking about joining IE University, what would you tell them? I would say it’s an excellent opportunity to not only get a great education but also a head start in your career, if you put in the effort. It’s also a place where you can make lifelong friends from all corners of the world. Alyssa Nichols always knew she would build her career in the world of finance and investments. So, once she was ready to pursue a degree, she started looking for an academic institution that could provide an international education in her area of interest.]]></page>

I knew that the world-renowned Bachelor in Economics would be rigorous and comprehensive, which is what I was looking for in a program. I found the inclusion of inventive models in the program particularly interesting, and I was keen to gain the analytical and problem- solving skills necessary to turn innovative ideas into reality. Could you tell us about your latest internship experience? I am currently pursuing an internship as a member of the regulatory strategy team at Eurex/Deutsche Börse in Frankfurt. Last year I completed an internship at Deutsche Börse in Frankfurt in the risk management division, so I was already used to the organization’s work culture. However, the work and tasks between the two internships are very distinct. A significant part of my role on the regulatory strategy team involves conducting research on different aspects of capital markets, regulation and policy. I have been actively involved in various consultations from regulatory bodies, such as the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) and the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (BaFIN). My internship also includes working on topics related to crypto and digital assets, ESG and the Markets in Financial Instruments Regulation and Directive (MiFIR/MiFID II). To date, my internship at Eurex has been a great learning experience, allowing me to gain insights into the world of financial regulation and policy making. How did your experience at IE University prepare you for your internship experience? IE University prepared me for my latest internship experience, as well as for my professional career, in several crucial ways. The diverse and international environment has broadened my perspectives and helped me cultivate a global mindset, a valuable asset in today’s interconnected world. Moreover, the development of soft skills, including communication, teamwork and leadership, has equipped me with the interpersonal abilities needed for success in any professional setting. What skills do you consider necessary in order to succeed in your field? I believe that in order to succeed in the field of economics and finance, it’s necessary to possess a diverse set of skills and attributes. Technical skills in financial analysis, quantitative modeling and financial software are fundamental, as is a deep understanding of economic principles and market dynamics. Strong analytical skills, close attention to detail, and critical-thinking abilities are essential for interpreting complex financial data and making informed decisions. And collaboration and adaptability are valuable for thriving in a dynamic, team- oriented environment. Additionally, staying up to date on industry trends and regulations via continuous learning is vital, especially given the evolving nature of the financial industry. What is the competitive advantage that studying at IE University provides you? IE University’s international environment has broadened my perspective, fostering cross-cultural communication and adaptability. The institution’s practical focus, hands-on projects and accessible internships have allowed me to gain real- world skills and have experiences that directly apply to my career aspirations. Plus, IE University’s emphasis on entrepreneurship, innovation and problem solving has nurtured my creative-thinking and problem-solving abilities, setting me apart in the job market. Overall, IE University has offered me a holistic education by combining academic excellence, practical experience and personal development. And thanks to the program’s optional exchange opportunity, I was able to spend four months studying at the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management, allowing me to start exploring the world of work. If someone were considering going to IE University, what would you tell them? Conduct thorough research on the programs available and select one that aligns closely with your academic and career aspirations. One of IE University’s best features is its commitment to practical learning. Therefore, make sure to take full advantage of internships, projects and case studies to gain hands- on experience that directly applies to your chosen field. Networking is key, and you will be given ample opportunities to connect with professionals and mentors. Attend industry events, participate in clubs or associations relevant to your field, and make use of the IE University alumni network. What advice would you give future Bachelor in Economics students? Consider the strong reputation the Bachelor in Economics at IE University has and take advantage of the resources at hand. Also, recognize that your IE Experience is not just about academic and career advancement, but that it’s also an opportunity for personal growth and development—embrace challenges, build resilience, and make the most of this enriching and transformative experience.
